One year ago, I had the privilege of representing SANCCOB in releasing rehabilitated penguins back into their wild colony at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town, on the Cape Peninsula of South Africa — for a private event with the Obamas.
I answered questions about the birds (President Obama was not in attendance, since he was giving a speech that evening), and assist in conducting the release with park rangers.
The two pictured in the box did not want to join the others…but instead just kept coming back to shore, crying and shaking their heads. The evening ended with me waist deep in the sea, encouraging them to swim away.
(P.S. Attempting to herd desperate, begging baby penguins away from the beach with your arms and softly, but sternly saying “NO! I AM NOT YOUR MOMMY!” is not as effective as one would think.)
